Gallant Guardians: The Nantucket Lightships
The Summer Exhibition

       The staff of the Egan Maritime Institute's Shipwreck and Lifesaving Museum asked A Sharpe Artist to create 4 posters for an exhibit about life on the Nantucket Lightship - from Lightship No. 1 (1856-1892) to LV-112 (1936-1975). You can visit the actual exhibit at the Museum located at 158 Polpis Road. Hours are Monday thru Saturday from 10:00am to 5:00pm and Sundays Noon to 4:00pm.

German U-Boat 53 visits Newport Harbor in 1916

On October 7th, 1916, U-53 anchors in Newport (RI) Harbor. The Captain goes ashore, meets the local Navy base admiral and buys the newspaper to find out the arrival and departure of shipping. the U boat departs that evening and over the next few weeks sinks several ships and forces survivors to row to the lightship 2 miles away.

The Bermuda Sail of Lightship No. 1

In the 1850s, the Nantucket New South Shoals No. 1 Lightship anchors off the Nantucket Shoals roughly 40-50 miles off-shore. In one storm, the lightship parts its anchor and ends up 800 miles away in Bermuda. Another time, the same lightship wrecks off Noman's Land island near Martha's Vineyard. it is estimated that this lightship left 25 mushroom anchors at the bottom of the ocean

Lightship No. 1 Provides Shelter During the Civil War.

in 1864, the confederate raider, CSS Tallahassee attacks shipping along the East Coast. One schooner was boarded, its cargo seized and the crew was forced into lifeboats. Three crew members made their way to Lightship No. 1 and spent the winter aboard.

Lightship 112 Parts it's Anchor

Lightship Lv-112 (on station between 1936-1975) parts one of it's anchors in a storm. This lightship is now a centerpiece for a museum along the East Boston, MA waterfront.
